People usually come to a Hanuman Ji pendant for one of two reasons: a devotion they have carried since childhood, or a strength they need right now. Before you buy a Hanuman Ji pendant, silver is only the first question. The others are whether the metal is solid 925 sterling silver, whether the face and form honour him, whether the bail and chain can carry the weight, and whether the size suits the person who will wear it.
We make our Shri Hanuman Ji Pendant in our Jaipur workshop, so I will use it as a worked example, but this checklist works for any seller. I will also explain what the pendant means, the Tuesday and Saturday traditions, and how men and women tend to wear it.
In short
- Hanuman is revered for wisdom, strength, courage, devotion and self-discipline, above all his devotion to Lord Rama.
- Tuesday and Saturday are traditionally devoted to Hanuman, and the Hanuman Chalisa, 40 chaupais by Tulsidas, is recited on those days.
- Check for a 925 stamp, "925 sterling silver" in writing (92.5% silver), an authenticity certificate, solid metal, a clearly detailed face and a chain strong enough for the weight.
- Our Shri Hanuman Ji Pendant weighs about 6 g and the chain is sold separately; our Silver Box Chain adjusts across lengths from 16 to 31.5 inches.
- Many men wear 20 to 24 inches; many women prefer 16 to 18 inches.
What a Hanuman Ji pendant means
Hanuman is a Hindu deity revered as a divine vanara and the devoted companion of Lord Rama, celebrated for his wisdom, strength, courage, devotion and self-discipline, and called Bajrang Bali across much of North India. The name Bajrang Bali is usually explained as "the strong one whose limbs are as hard as vajra".
So a Hanuman pendant is not only about strength. It is strength in service of devotion, which is a rarer thing. People wear it before exams, through illness in the family, on long night shifts and on ordinary days, as a reminder of what steady faith looks like. We do not promise it will protect anyone; that is between the wearer and Hanuman Ji.
Tuesday, Saturday and the Chalisa
Tuesday and Saturday are traditionally devoted to Hanuman, and the Hanuman Chalisa, composed by Tulsidas in Awadhi and named for its 40 chaupais, is recited on those days in many homes. Many people first put on a new Hanuman pendant on a Tuesday or Saturday, often after reciting the Chalisa. That is a lovely custom, not a condition.
What to check in a Hanuman Ji pendant: stamp, certificate, face and chain
Many "Hanuman locket" listings online are short on facts and long on adjectives. Here is what I would check, and how our own pendant answers each point.
| Check | What good looks like | Red flag | Our Shri Hanuman Ji Pendant |
|---|---|---|---|
| 925 stamp | A small 925 stamped on the metal itself | No stamp anywhere on the piece | Stamped 925 |
| "925 sterling silver" in writing | The listing says 925 sterling silver in plain words | "Silver plated", "silver alloy", "German silver", "oxidised silver look" | 925 sterling silver, stated on the product page |
| Authenticity certificate | The seller confirms the purity in writing | No paperwork, and vague answers when you ask about the metal | Every order comes with an authenticity certificate confirming the silver is 925 |
| Solid or hollow | Weight stated in grams and believable for the size | A large pendant with no weight given | About 6 g, solid |
| Finish and detail of the face | Eyes, crown, hands and ornaments clearly defined; smooth edges | A blurred face that reads as a blob from arm's length | Seated Hanuman with one hand raised, every ornament picked out |
| Chain strength | A firmly joined bail and a chain with some body; seller says whether the chain is included | A thin jump ring or thread-thin chain holding a heavy medallion | Wide bail; chain sold separately |
1. The 925 stamp
Turn the pendant over and look for a small 925 stamped into the metal. It takes five seconds and it is the first thing I check on any silver piece. A stamp on the box or the tag is not the same thing; it needs to be on the silver. Every Smith Jewels piece is stamped 925.
2. "925 sterling silver" in writing
925 sterling silver is 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper, for strength. The product page should say those words plainly. If a listing hides behind "silver tone" or "silver finish", assume there is little or no silver in it. German silver, despite the name, contains no silver at all; it is copper, zinc and nickel. A seller who answers questions about the metal clearly is worth more than any adjective in the listing.
3. The authenticity certificate
Ask what paperwork comes with the pendant. Every order from us comes with an authenticity certificate confirming the silver is 925. It is our own certificate, issued by us as the maker, and it puts in writing what the stamp says on the metal. If a seller will not put the purity in writing, that tells you something too.
4. Solid, not hollow
Hollow pendants look generous in photos but can dent easily. A solid medallion feels cool and heavy in the palm in a way you notice immediately. Ask for the weight in grams. Ours is about 6 g, and our About page says it plainly: no hollow pieces.
5. The finish and detail of the face
This is where devotion and craft meet. Look at the eyes, the mukut, the hands and the ornaments on the chest, then run a finger round the edge: a good finish feels smooth, with no sharp burrs. On our Shri Hanuman Ji Pendant, Hanuman sits cross-legged with one hand raised, and the background is filled with राम, Ram, written over and over in Devanagari. For a devotee whose whole story is devotion to Ram, I cannot think of a better background. We oxidise the recesses so every muscle and ornament reads clearly against the raised silver.
6. Chain strength
A 6 g medallion needs a bail that is properly joined and a chain with some body. Hang it from a thread-thin chain and both will wear out early. Our Silver Box Chain is made of tiny cube-shaped links that lie smooth and flat, and each option adjusts across about 1.5 inches, from 16 to 17.5 inches up to 30 to 31.5 inches. Our guide to silver chain designs compares other links if you prefer a different look.
Sizing a Hanuman pendant for men and for women
Many men wear a Hanuman pendant at 20 to 24 inches, either tucked under a shirt or sitting over a kurta in the middle of the chest. Many women prefer 16 to 18 inches, where a round medallion sits just below the collarbone and shows at a kurta neckline. If the pendant will be worn under clothes every day, go a little longer so it rests flat rather than pulling at the neck. Our necklace length guide shows where each length falls on the body.
For a gift, borrow a chain the person already wears, lay it straight and measure it end to end. That is your length, and no awkward question needed.
Wearing it with respect
None of these are rules, just practices many families follow. Most people keep Hanuman Ji above the waist, as a pendant rather than on an anklet. Some take the pendant off before a cremation or the bathroom; others never take it off. When it comes off, it goes into its pouch or the puja space rather than a pile of keys. Follow your own family's custom where you have one.
How we make Hanuman Ji in Jaipur
Our family has worked with silver since 1985, and a deity's face is the hardest thing our karigars make. Get the eyes a fraction wrong and the whole expression changes. That is why I tell everyone who asks to zoom in on the face before anything else: a seller who is proud of the work will show it to you up close.
Here is my truth bomb: the jewellery industry has taught buyers to judge a devotional pendant by its photograph, and photographs flatter plated metal beautifully. Weigh the words instead. Every piece we make is 925 sterling silver and stamped 925, made in our own workshop, with no middlemen. If you want a fuller checklist for any online seller, read how to tell if silver is real before you buy online.
And expect your pendant to darken a little over the months, especially in the deep areas. Silver reacts with sulphur in the air and in sweat to form silver sulphide. That is chemistry, not a defect, and a soft silver cloth brings the raised parts back to bright. Our silver jewellery care guide puts cleaning and storage in one place.
Frequently asked questions
Can women wear a Hanuman Ji pendant?
Yes, and many do. Hanuman is traditionally revered as a lifelong brahmachari, and some families follow their own customs around women and Hanuman worship, so follow yours if it matters to you. Nothing about the pendant itself is reserved for men, and a 16 to 18 inch chain suits most women.
Which day should I start wearing a Hanuman locket?
Many people choose a Tuesday or Saturday, the days traditionally devoted to Hanuman, and recite the Hanuman Chalisa before putting it on for the first time. Others start on Hanuman Jayanti or simply on the day it arrives. This is custom and personal preference, not a rule.
What chain length suits a Hanuman pendant for men?
Most men are comfortable at 20 to 24 inches, which lets a medallion sit mid-chest over a kurta or lie flat under a shirt. Choose a chain with some body, such as a box chain, because a 6 g pendant on a very fine chain wears both out faster. Measure a chain he already owns.
Will a silver Hanuman pendant turn black?
It will darken slowly, which is how real silver behaves. Sulphur in the air, sweat and cosmetics forms a thin layer of silver sulphide, most visible in the deep areas. Wipe the raised parts with a soft silver cloth and store it in its pouch; the darker recesses actually make the face easier to read.
Choosing your Hanuman Ji pendant: silver you can trust
Choosing a Hanuman Ji pendant, silver first, then everything else: a 925 stamp, a written 925 sterling silver claim and an authenticity certificate, solid metal, a face made with care, a chain strong enough for the weight, and a length that suits the wearer. Get those right and the pendant will be with you through exams, long shifts and ordinary Tuesdays for years. Real Silver. Made to be worn every day.
