You want to start wearing silver, but you do not want to look as if you are in costume. The easiest way into silver jewellery for men is one piece worn every day, usually a thread bracelet with a silver bead or an adjustable ring in 925 sterling silver, and only after that earrings, a watch charm, a brooch or a pendant.
This is our starting point for men's silver at Smith Jewels. It puts every kind of men's piece in the order I would add them, says honestly how first-timer friendly each one is, and points you to the deeper guide for each. It is written for men buying for themselves, and for the wives, sisters and mothers who are usually the ones who start it.
In short
- Start with one piece you will wear daily: a thread bracelet (about 2 g) or an adjustable ring (about 4 g).
- Wear it for a month before you add a second piece.
- Add earrings only if you already have a piercing; a murki is the traditional men's choice.
- Pendants usually need a chain bought separately; our box chain comes in adjustable lengths from 16 to 31.5 inches.
- 925 sterling silver is 92.5% silver. "Silver-toned" and "German silver" mean no silver at all.
Where to start with silver jewellery for men
Men stop wearing jewellery for one reason: it gets in the way. A ring that catches on a bag strap, a chain that tangles with a watch, an earring nobody expected. So the first piece should be the one that asks nothing of you.
Here is how I rank the usual men's pieces for a first-timer. The score is my own judgement, not a survey.
| Piece | First-timer friendly (my score out of 5) | Where to wear it | Good first example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thread bracelet with silver bead | 5 | Every day, office to weekend | Unisex Silver Ball Thread Bracelet |
| Watch charm | 5 | On a smartwatch strap, every day | Mahadev Unisex Watch Charm |
| Adjustable ring | 4 | Index or middle finger, daily | OM Unisex Ring |
| Pendant on a chain | 3 | Under a shirt, or over a kurta | Trishul Damru Unisex Pendant |
| Brooch | 3 | Bandhgala, blazer or sherwani lapel | Veer Brooch |
| Murki | 2 (5 if already pierced) | One ear, daily | Men Murki Earrings |
Step one: a bracelet or a ring
The thread bracelet
A thread bracelet with a silver bead looks like the kalava many Indian men already wear, which is exactly why it works. The Unisex Silver Ball Thread Bracelet is one polished 925 bead on black or red thread, about 2 g. It sits beside a watch without fighting it, and it does not need a size conversation. If you would rather wear something rigid, our guide to silver bangles and kadas covers fit.
The adjustable ring
If your hands are your thing, start with a ring. The OM Unisex Ring has the syllable in bold relief with oxidised detailing, about 4 g, and it is adjustable, so you do not need to know your size. Wear it on the index or middle finger. Those fingers carry no particular message in most families, unlike the ring finger, which many people read as engagement.
Step two: earrings, only if you are already pierced
The murki is a small curved earring that men in many parts of India have long worn, and it is the piece I suggest for a man who already has a piercing. The Men Murki Earrings come as a single piece or a pair, about 4 g for one, in a plain confident curve. Ear piercing is not only a girls' custom in India either: the karnavedha rite is performed for most girls and some boys, as the Wikipedia entry on earrings notes. If you are not pierced, do not get pierced for a gift, and speak to a professional piercer before you do. Our full guide to men's silver earrings covers styles and care.
Step three: a watch charm for the smartwatch
A smartwatch strap is a blank space most men glance at many times a day. A silver watch charm clips onto it and turns a gadget into something personal. Ours weigh about 2 g each, and the watch charm collection runs from the Mahadev and Ram name charms to an evil eye. Read why silver watch charms suit everyday straps if you are unsure.
Step four: a brooch for the wedding season
Indian wedding season peaks from November to February, and that is when a man in a bandhgala or sherwani finally has a lapel to fill. A brooch is a decorative pin made to be attached to clothing, and on a man it does the job a pocket square does on a Western suit. The Veer Brooch, a small silver sword, and the Suraj Brooch, a sun with radiating rays, are both made to order, so allow extra time. Browse the brooch collection and read our silver brooches for men guide before you choose.
Step five: a pendant or a mala
Pendants come last because they need a decision about chain length. The Trishul Damru Unisex Pendant pairs Shiva's trident and drum with a rudraksha bead, about 6 g, and the chain is sold separately. Our Silver Box Chain is the one I would pair with it: smooth, square links, in adjustable length options from 16 to 17.5 inches up to 30 to 31.5 inches. For a man, I suggest one of the longer options so the pendant sits on the chest rather than at the collar.
For a Vaishnava man, a tulsi kanthi mala often matters more than any pendant. The Wikipedia entry on tulsi notes that Vaishnavites are known as "those who bear the tulsi around the neck". Our Handmade Tulsi Kanthi Mala strings tulsi beads with 925 silver in 16, 18 and 22 inch sizes.
Is it actually silver? Men's jewellery has a vocabulary problem
Men's jewellery is full of words that sound like metal and are not. "Silver-toned" is a colour. "Oxidised finish" can sit on brass. "German silver" is a copper, zinc and nickel alloy with no silver in it at all. "Stainless steel silver chain" is steel. All of them are designed to be read quickly.
Look for 925. Sterling silver is 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper, for strength. Every Smith Jewels piece is stamped 925, and every order we send comes with an authenticity certificate confirming the silver is 925. Wherever you buy, check three things: the 925 stamp on the piece itself, "925 sterling silver" written on the listing, and an authenticity certificate with the order.
And expect it to tarnish. Sweat, cosmetics and polluted air all carry sulphur compounds that darken silver over time. It wipes off with a soft silver cloth. If a "silver" piece stays mirror-bright through a year of daily wear, be suspicious.
What I tell men who are new to this
Buy one piece and wear it for a month. A month tells you more than any style guide: whether you like the weight, whether it fights your watch, whether you forget it is there. Then buy the second.
Choose the piece that fits your day, not your wardrobe. A man who wears a smartwatch twelve hours a day needs a watch charm before he needs a pendant. A man who already ties a red thread at every puja will wear a thread bracelet without thinking.
And do not buy silver to look rich. Buy it because it is real. Our family has worked with silver since 1985, and our men's pieces come out of the same Jaipur workshop as everything else we make, finished by hand by our karigars. Pick one up and you feel the coolness and the small, solid weight that plated metal never quite has. Our guide to wearing silver at the office has more on keeping it quiet at work.
Frequently asked questions
What silver jewellery should a man wear first?
A thread bracelet with a silver bead or an adjustable silver ring. Both are easy to wear every day, neither needs a size, and both sit comfortably alongside a watch and office clothes. Wear the first piece for a month before adding anything else, so you learn what you actually like.
Can men wear silver jewellery every day?
Yes. 925 sterling silver is strong enough for daily wear because of the 7.5% of other metals, usually copper, alloyed into it. Take it off for the gym, swimming and the shower, wipe it after sweaty days, and store it in its pouch. The tarnish that builds up wipes off.
Which finger should a man wear a silver ring on?
The index or middle finger is the easiest place for a first ring. Both are comfortable for an adjustable band and carry no special meaning in most families. Many people read a ring on the ring finger as an engagement or wedding ring, and the little finger suits a slimmer band.
Is silver or steel better for men's jewellery?
Steel is harder and does not tarnish, which is why so much men's jewellery uses it. But it is not a precious metal, and it is often sold with the word "silver" in the name. If you want real metal that ages with you and can be wiped back to bright, choose 925 sterling silver.
Starting your silver jewellery for men, one piece at a time
Silver jewellery for men does not need a plan or a collection. It needs one real 925 piece that fits your day, worn until it feels like yours, and then a second. Start with thread or a ring, and build from there. Real Silver. Made to be worn every day.
