You have seen a wide silver ring on someone's big toe, at a wedding in Jaipur or on a beach in Goa, and you want to know whether it means something and whether it will stay on. A big toe ring is a wider, usually adjustable ring worn on the big toe, and in India it has older roots than most people realise, but it is a different piece from the bichiya that married women wear on the second toe.

This guide explains where the big toe ring fits in Indian tradition and where it does not, how it compares with the bichiya, how to size and wear one, and how it gets along with your shoes. It is for women who already wear bichiya and want something bolder, and for anyone who simply likes the look.

In short

  • The traditional bichiya is worn in pairs on the second toe, and in many communities it marks a married woman. A big toe ring is a separate piece.
  • Big toe ornaments do have Indian roots: the Hindi and Urdu word anvat describes a ring with little bells worn by women on the big toe.
  • Today most women wear a big toe ring as a style choice, single or in a pair, with no fixed meaning.
  • The big toe rings in this guide weigh roughly 4 to 6.4g each, have adjustable bands, and come as a single piece or a pair.
  • Most also fit a thumb, which is why we call them big thumb toe rings.

What a big toe ring means in Indian tradition

Start with the piece everyone knows. The INTACH heritage archive entry on the bichiya describes it as a toe ring usually worn by women on the second toe, and in many Indian communities a pair of bichiya is one of the signs of a married woman, much like sindoor or a mangalsutra. The names change by language: bichiya in Hindi, metti in Tamil, jodvi or jodavi in Marathi, mettelu in Telugu.

The big toe has its own, quieter history. The Rekhta dictionary entry for anvat defines it as a ring with little bells worn by women on the big toe. The Wikipedia article on toe rings records that, traditionally, a large ring on the great toe of the left foot indicated married status, though it does not say where.

So the honest answer is that big toe ornaments exist in Indian tradition, they vary a great deal by region and community, and they have never been as widespread or as clearly tied to marriage as the second toe bichiya. If your family has a custom around it, that custom is the one that matters. If not, a big toe ring means whatever you want it to mean. In Hindi the big toe is the angutha, which is why you will also see them called angutha rings.

Big toe ring vs bichiya

A big toe ring is a ring made to sit on the big toe, usually wider and heavier than a second toe ring, often with an open back so it can be adjusted, and worn today mostly as a style piece rather than a marker of marriage.

Big toe ring Bichiya (second toe ring)
Which toe Big toe (angutha); many also fit a thumb Second toe, usually on both feet
Tradition Regional; the anvat is a big toe ornament with bells Widely associated with married women in many communities
How it is worn Single or as a pair Traditionally as a pair, one on each foot
Band Wide, often a statement design Slimmer, from plain bands to filigree
Weight (our pieces) About 4 to 6.4g for one ring (designs in this guide) From about 1.5g for a light pair
Fit Open back, adjusted gently to the toe Adjustable open bands, or fixed sizes on some designs

Many women wear both: a pair of bichiya on the second toes and one bold ring on the big toe. Some of our designs come in matching versions, so the Twin Serenity Big Thumb Toe-ring has a slimmer twin, the Twin Serenity Toe-Rings (Pair), for the second toes.

How to wear a big toe ring

Position

The ring sits on the lower part of the big toe, between the base and the joint. It should not ride up over the joint, and it should not slide down into the web between the toes where it will rub.

Putting it on

Open-back rings are adjusted, not forced. Open the band only a little, slide it on from the side of the toe, then press the two ends gently towards each other with your fingers until it feels secure. Do not bend it open and shut in the same spot again and again: repeated bending at one point weakens any silver band over time. If you need a size reference first, our guide to measuring ring size at home uses the same string method that works for toes.

Footwear

Big toe rings belong with open toes: sandals, kolhapuris, slides, or bare feet at home. In closed shoes or juttis the upper presses straight onto the ring, and a wide band will rub within an hour. Bells and raised motifs can also catch on socks, carpets and the hem of a saree, so a bell design is best kept for days when you are not rushing.

Styling

A single big toe ring with a fine anklet on the same foot is the easiest everyday look, and our guide to silver anklet and payal designs will help you choose one. For weddings, go fuller: a pair of big toe rings, bichiya on the second toes and payal. Our guide to choosing a silver toe ring covers the bichiya side of the stack.

Our big toe rings, and which to pick

Every one of these is 925 sterling silver with an adjustable band, and each is available as a single piece or a pair.

For a first big toe ring, the Aabha Big Thumb Toe Ring is a wide band with a row of raised dots and oxidised detailing, about 5.6g. If you want sound, the Silver bells Thumb Big Toe-Ring carries tiny ghungroo bells, the closest thing we make to the old anvat. The Jodha Big Thumb Toe-Ring is ornate and palace-inspired, with a crescent moon motif and ghungroo details.

For something less traditional, the Wanderer's Soul Big Thumb Toe Ring is engraved with mountains and pine forest and is the heaviest of the set at about 6.4g. The Blossom Big Thumb Toe Ring wraps the toe in small handcrafted flowers, and the Tribal Bloom Big Thumb Toe Ring has oxidised tribal swirls with two turquoise-toned accents.

Most of these have an oxidised finish, the dark detail in the recesses that makes the pattern stand out. It softens with wear and that is normal. Our post on caring for oxidised silver explains how to clean it without stripping the black.

What I tell women who ask about big toe rings

Feet are hard on jewellery. They sweat, they take your full weight, they meet floors, sand and bathroom water every day. That is exactly why I am stubborn about toe rings being real silver. A great many toe rings sold online as "silver" are plated alloy or German silver, which contains no silver at all, and plating can wear through quickly where a ring rubs against the floor and your sandal. Real 925 sterling silver is 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals for strength, and it will darken with sweat instead of peeling. We stamp every piece 925 in our Jaipur workshop, where my family has worked with silver since 1985.

You will also read that toe rings press on nerves linked to the uterus or the heart. There is no scientific evidence for that, and I would never sell you a toe ring on a health promise. Wear one because you like how it looks on your foot.

A practical note for wedding season: most of our pieces dispatch in 2 to 5 working days, but if you need toe rings for a particular date, message us before you order rather than after.

Frequently asked questions

Can unmarried women wear a big toe ring?

Yes. The marriage custom most families follow is the bichiya on the second toe, and even that varies by community. A big toe ring is not widely treated as a marriage marker today, so unmarried women wear them freely. If your own family has a rule about toe rings before marriage, follow theirs.

Which foot should a big toe ring go on?

Either foot. Some older references mention a large ring on the left big toe as a sign of marriage, but there is no rule most families follow today. Many women wear one on the foot that shows most in photographs, or a matching pair. Choose the foot where it rubs least against your usual sandals.

Can I wear a big toe ring as a thumb ring?

Often, yes. Our big thumb toe rings are sized for the big toe or the thumb, and the open back lets you adjust the fit for either. Adjust it gently and only a little at a time, and avoid switching between toe and thumb every day, because repeated bending in one spot weakens the band.

Why does my big toe ring turn black?

Real silver reacts with sulphur compounds in sweat and air to form silver sulphide, a dark layer that is chemistry, not a defect. Feet sweat, so toe rings often darken faster than earrings. Wipe it with a soft silver cloth, dry your feet after bathing, and keep it in its pouch when you take it off.

Wearing a big toe ring your way

A big toe ring has roots in Indian tradition, in the bell-hung anvat and in regional customs, but it has never carried the fixed meaning of the second toe bichiya. Wear one alone, wear a pair, stack it with your bichiya and payal, and keep it in open footwear so it stays comfortable. Real Silver. Made to be worn every day.
