You have seen the word "small" on three hoop listings, and each one meant something different. Silver hoop earrings are best chosen by their diameter in millimetres, not by small, medium or large, and once you know roughly how 10 mm, 25 mm and 40 mm sit on a face, picking the right pair in 925 sterling silver takes a minute.
This guide gives you a size table in millimetres with what each size does on the face, a quick way to preview a size at home with a coin, the closures you will meet, the difference between everyday and statement hoops, and a word on hoops for men. I make silver jewellery in Jaipur, and the number on the listing is the first thing I would look at.
In short
- There is no industry standard: one brand's "large" is another's "medium". Always look for the diameter in mm.
- The everyday 10-rupee coin is 27 mm across. Hold one at your earlobe to preview a medium hoop.
- A listing written as "2 x 30 mm" often gives wire thickness first, then diameter.
- Huggies follow the curve of the lobe and are the easiest hoops to wear all day.
- 925 sterling silver is 92.5% silver. Hoops sold as "oxidised silver" can be German silver, which contains none.
Silver hoop earrings size guide: what each size does on the face
Hoop earrings are circular or semi-circular earrings that pass through the piercing and look very much like a small ring; the style is old enough that silver hoops were already common in the Minoan civilisation, around 2000 to 1600 BCE, according to the Wikipedia entry on earrings.
What has never been settled is what "small" means. Brands draw the lines in different places, so treat the bands below as my rough guide, not a rule.
| Diameter (approx.) | Usually called | What it does on the face | When I would wear it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 to 12 mm | Huggie | Hugs the lobe; reads almost like a stud | Sleeping, office, second and third piercings |
| 15 to 20 mm | Small | A flash of silver below the lobe that catches light when you turn | Every day, with anything |
| 25 to 30 mm | Medium | Frames the face without reaching the jaw | Office to dinner, kurta or shirt |
| 40 to 50 mm | Large | Draws a line towards the jaw; the hoop becomes the outfit | Evenings, festivals, hair tied up |
| 60 mm and up | Oversized | Sculptural; weight and movement start to matter | Occasionally, for a few hours |
How to preview a hoop size at home
You do not need to guess. Every design of the bimetallic 10-rupee coin since 2005 is 27 mm across, as the Wikipedia page on the coin lists, so holding one with its top edge at your piercing shows you roughly how a medium hoop will sit. For other sizes, hold a ruler up to your lobe in the mirror.
Then check two numbers on the listing. First, inner or outer diameter: the outer measurement includes the wire on both sides, so a thick hoop sits smaller than its outer number suggests. Second, the wire thickness. Around 1 mm reads delicate, 2 mm reads confident, and anything chunkier is a statement in its own right, whatever the diameter.
Hoop closures, explained
The closure decides how easy a hoop is to put on, how secure it feels and whether you can sleep in it.
- Hinged or clicker: one side swings open on a hinge and clicks shut. Quick to wear, and common on huggies.
- Latch back: a post passes through the ear and a small latch closes over it. Secure for larger hoops.
- Endless: a thin wire slides into a hollow tube and is held by tension. Light and seamless, but fiddly for the first few tries.
- Spiral: one coil of wire twists through a single piercing so it looks like two stacked hoops. No clasp at all.
Everyday hoops vs statement hoops
An everyday hoop is one you stop noticing. Our Floral Motif Hoop Earrings are slim spiral hoops, each carrying a small square charm with a four-petal flower; the product photo shows how the coil sits through one piercing like a stacked pair. They are delicate enough for the office and the charm gives them a little movement. The price is for a pair.
A statement hoop is one people notice. The Mystic Orbit Hoops are an elongated teardrop shape with layered, beaded rims and oxidised detail, so they read from across a room. Wear them with your hair tied back and nothing at the neck, and let them do the work.
If you are unsure which suits your face, our guide to choosing silver earrings for your face shape walks through it.
Can you sleep in silver hoops?
Small, close-fitting hoops are the only ones I would sleep in. Sleepers, plain wire hoops, were originally meant to be worn at night to keep a piercing from closing. Anything larger catches on pillows and hair, and a spiral or latch-back hoop can press into the side of your head. Our guide to wearing silver jewellery while sleeping covers the rest.
Hoops for men: the murki
A murki is a small, curved earring, traditionally worn by men in many parts of India, and it is the closest thing Indian jewellery has to a men's huggie. The Simple Unisex Murki is a crescent shape, fuller at the base with a beaded edge, about 2 g for a single piece, and it comes as a single or a pair. For a heavier curve, the Men Murki Earrings are about 4 g each. Our guide to men's silver earrings has more.
Is your hoop actually silver?
Search for silver hoops and you will find "oxidised silver" hoops whose material line says German silver. German silver is a copper, zinc and nickel alloy with no silver in it at all; the word "silver" in the name is borrowed. Plated hoops are common too, and plating tends to wear first where a hoop rubs, at the piercing.
925 sterling silver is 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. Every Smith Jewels piece is stamped 925, and every order we send comes with an authenticity certificate confirming the silver is 925. Wherever you buy hoops, check three things: the 925 stamp on the hoop itself, "925 sterling silver" written on the listing, and an authenticity certificate with the order. If your ears have reacted to cheap hoops before, our guide to sensitive ears and 925 silver explains what usually causes it; for any persistent reaction, see a doctor.
My own hoop rule
I have one rule for hoops: the smaller the hoop, the more often it gets worn. Huggies go to the office, the school run and to bed. Big hoops come out a few times a year and feel like an event, which is exactly what they are for.
So if you are buying your first pair of silver hoops, buy small and buy real. A slim 925 hoop that you never take off will tarnish a little where it meets your skin, and that is the proof it is silver. Wipe it with a soft cloth, store it in the pouch, and it will look like itself again.
Frequently asked questions
What size hoop earrings are best for everyday wear?
Something between 10 and 20 mm in diameter suits most people every day. Hoops in that range sit close to the lobe, do not catch on collars or dupattas, and work with office clothes as easily as with a kurta. Go larger for evenings, and keep the very small huggies for sleeping and extra piercings.
What is the difference between huggies and hoops?
Huggies are a type of hoop that closely follows the curve of the earlobe, usually around 8 to 12 mm across and often with a hinged closure. Regular hoops hang below the lobe and can be any size. Every huggie is a hoop, but most hoops are not huggies.
Do silver hoop earrings turn black?
Yes, real 925 silver hoops slowly darken because silver reacts with sulphur compounds in air, sweat and cosmetics to form silver sulphide. Humidity speeds it up. It is a sign of real silver, not damage, and it wipes off with a soft silver cloth. Store hoops in a pouch between wears.
Can men wear hoop earrings?
Yes. Men have worn small hoops for centuries, and in India the murki, a small curved earring, has a long tradition among men. Most men start with a small hoop or murki on one ear, which reads as understated rather than showy. Choose solid 925 silver so the piercing only meets real metal.
Finding your silver hoop earrings
Choose silver hoop earrings by the millimetre, not the label: preview the size with a coin, check the wire thickness and the closure, and make sure the listing says 925. Start small if you want a pair you will never take off. Real Silver. Made to be worn every day.
