You want two rings that say you belong together, without the two of you looking like you bought a uniform. For couple rings, silver is the metal I would choose first: 925 sterling silver is strong enough for daily wear, holds fine detail and lettering, and lets you buy two well-made rings for far less than one gold band. The real decision is not the metal. It is whether your rings should match exactly, echo each other, or carry each other's names.
This guide is for couples at every stage: the ones who are not engaged yet, the ones living in two different cities, and the married ones who want something less formal than their wedding bands. I will walk you through the three ways to do it, how to get both sizes right without spoiling a surprise, and what to check so that you are buying silver and not silver-coloured metal.
In short
- 925 sterling silver is 92.5% silver; the other 7.5% (usually copper) gives a ring the strength to keep its shape on a working hand.
- Three approaches: identical unisex rings, coordinated rings in the same motif, or name rings carrying each other's names.
- Adjustable designs take most of the sizing risk out when one of you does not know the surprise is coming.
- Our Personalised Name Ring is made to order, with a listed processing time of 15 to 20 days, so plan around dates.
- Many online "couple ring sets" are silver-plated alloy. Look for the words base metal and plating in the listing.
What couple rings mean in India now
A couple ring is a pair of rings worn by two partners as a visible sign of their bond, chosen together or gifted by one to the other, and it can mark anything from a first year together to a promise made before families are involved.
In practice, couple rings tend to carry one of three meanings. The first is a promise: a ring exchanged before the roka or sagai, when you are certain about each other but the formal engagement is still a family conversation away. The second is distance, a ring on each hand when work or study keeps you in different cities. The third is the everyday ring for married couples who keep their engagement diamonds and gold bands for occasions and want something they can wear to the office, on the school run and at the sabzi market.
The idea is far older than Instagram. The Victoria and Albert Museum holds a gold ring made in England between 1500 and 1600 with "I AM YOURS KS" engraved on the inside, and its catalogue notes that by 1430 rings inscribed with love messages were known as posies. A name ring for your partner is a close cousin of that idea.
If the promise is the heart of it for you, our post on jewellery as a symbol of commitment goes deeper into what people choose and why.
Three ways to choose couple rings: silver designs that match without matching everything
1. Identical unisex rings
The simplest option is the same ring, twice. This works best with designs that are genuinely unisex in weight and scale, so that neither ring looks like a borrowed accessory on the other person's hand.
The OM Unisex Ring carries the syllable in bold relief with oxidised detailing around it, about 4 grams and adjustable. The Snake Serpent Unisex Ring wraps a scaled serpent around the finger with head and tail meeting, about 3 grams and also adjustable; if you want the story behind the motif, read our guide to the silver snake ring's meaning. The Unisex Turtle Ring, with its textured shell, suits couples who like a ring with a little character.
2. Coordinated rings in the same motif
This is my favourite approach for couples whose tastes are different. You share the symbol but each ring suits its wearer. Our Shiva pair is a good example: the Trishul Damru Unisex Ring is a substantial band of about 7 grams with a Rudraksha bead set into the design, while the Little Damru Ring carries just the miniature drum on a lighter band of about 4 grams. One reads bold, one reads quiet, and anyone who looks closely sees that they belong together.
3. Name rings with each other's names
The most personal option is a ring that carries your partner's name, worn by you. The Personalised Name Ring shapes a chosen name or word into silver script along the band, in English, Hindi or another language. Each letter is formed by hand, which is why it is made to order and why the product page lists a processing time of 15 to 20 days. Customised orders also cannot be paid by cash on delivery.
The product page lists letter-count options from a single letter up to 10 to 11 letters. A short name or a nickname usually reads more clearly on a finger than a long full name, so if your partner is a "Siddharth", it is worth asking yourself whether "Sid" is what you actually call him.

How to size two people secretly
Sizing is where surprise couple rings go wrong. You know your own size; you are guessing his, or hers. Here is how to reduce the guesswork.
- Choose adjustable for the surprise. The OM, Snake Serpent, Turtle, Trishul Damru and Little Damru rings are all adjustable, so a small error in your guess does not ruin the moment.
- Borrow a ring they already wear on the same finger. Trace the inside circle on paper or measure the inner diameter in millimetres, then compare it with a size chart. Our guide on how to measure ring size at home explains the method.
- Remember that fingers differ. A ring that fits a right-hand ring finger may not fit the left, and his fingers are almost certainly not your size, so never use your own ring as the guide for his.
- Ask a sibling or friend. Someone who has bought them a ring before is a better source than a guess.
Adjust an open ring gently and only a little at a time. Bending it back and forth repeatedly in the same spot weakens any metal, silver included.
Silver, plated or "silver-toned": what you are really buying
Here is something the online couple-ring market does not say loudly. A lot of what is sold as a "silver couple ring set" is silver-plated alloy with a cubic zirconia on top, and the listing tells you so only in the small print under base metal and plating. It will look the part for a few weeks. Then the plating wears through on the palm side, where rings rub hardest, and the base metal shows.
A real 925 ring is silver all the way through. It will tarnish, and that is chemistry, not a defect: silver reacts with sulphur compounds in the air, in sweat and in cosmetics. You may even find that one of your rings darkens faster than the other, because two people's skin, soaps and days are never the same. A soft silver cloth brings both back. If you have ever had a ring turn your finger green, our post on rings that will not turn your finger green explains what was actually going on.
What I tell couples who ask me
Pick rings that each of you would wear even if the other were not watching. A couple ring that one partner quietly leaves in a drawer says more than any engraving.
Do not force your taste onto his hand, or hers. If you love delicate and he lives in a heavy kada, the coordinated route is kinder than identical rings. And if you are doing names, spell-check with someone who will keep the secret. Every name ring we make is handcrafted by our karigars in Jaipur, letter by letter, and a spelling error on an order form becomes a spelling error in silver.
Frequently asked questions
Which finger do you wear a couple ring on?
There is no fixed rule. Many couples wear them on the ring finger, often the right hand if they want to keep the left free for a future engagement ring. Customs vary across Indian communities, so choose what feels right to both of you and measure that exact finger before ordering.
Are silver couple rings good for daily wear?
Yes, if they are 925 sterling silver. The 7.5% of other metals makes the ring strong enough for everyday wear. Take rings off for heavy cleaning, swimming and the gym, keep perfume and lotion away from them, and wipe them with a soft silver cloth when they darken.
Can couple rings be different designs?
Yes, and for many couples that works better. Coordinated rings share a motif or symbol but differ in scale or weight, so each suits its wearer. A bold band for one partner and a slimmer ring in the same motif for the other still reads clearly as a pair.
Is a promise ring the same as an engagement ring?
No. A promise ring marks a commitment without being a formal proposal, while an engagement ring is given when you agree to marry. In India, some couples exchange promise rings before families meet, and some later keep wearing them alongside, or instead of, engagement rings.
Choosing your couple rings in silver
When it comes to couple rings, silver lets you choose for meaning first: the same ring twice, one motif in two scales, or each other's names in your own script. Get the sizes right, buy real 925 and let both rings wear in with your lives. Real Silver. Made to be worn every day.
